So you know that reviewer Craig Jenkins who sometimes feels like contributing a post now and then? Well, he didn’t write this but he certainly let me know about this New York City-based duo. Armed with a guitar, bass, sampler, and two turntables, the guys behind Hosey craft a rather innovative take on instrumental hip-hop. Their music reminds me of a blending of the best of what I’ve heard from a number of sources, from DJ Shadow to Kid Koala to Dan the Automator to Madlib. It’s very sample-based, yet musically driven — and altogether captivating. I can’t help but be partial to the “30 Rock” samples driving the track “So There’s a Girl…”, though “Just a Few Seconds” is equally dope, especially the ill-as-hell Spaceballs samples. I’m hoping you all dig this stuff as much as I do.
Stream the two tracks below and download them after the jump. Or you can cop their entire album, Goodbye Bikini Island, at their BandCamp page.
