Guards is a New York band that put out an EP last summer that got my attention. And they recently put out a 7-inch of three covers, that do what a cover song should do: sound different than the original. And who do they cover? Metallica for one. They take the melancholy of Vampire Weekend’s “Taxi Cab” and turn it into full-blown, Prozac prescription depression and they then lift M.I.A.’s “Born Free” from its ginger bashing video and make it sound like a cover of a song from 1969. A song that Kid Rock likely wishes he wrote for a Wrangler jeans commercial.
