GoldLink, one of hip-hop’s latest liberators of style and substance, ascends to new heights with the isolated release of “Sober Thoughts”. Consistent collaborator and bounce enthusiast Kaytranada crafts the retro-tinged backdrop, integrating curt hi-hats, old school synth hits and a healthy dose of chopped vocal samples.
Above the relatively bare landscape, GoldLink continues a lyrical trend of his: superficial shallowness. A quick listen detects little more than sex-obsessed talk (admittedly delivered in a fast-paced, unique way); however, actually listening along to form a bigger picture brings different results. Repeatedly dropped F-Bombs are obscene at first glance but truthfully describe the relationship between relationships and revenge in a highly condensed manner. This Virginia native is going to stick around awhile, and his ceiling is infinitely high. Hang tight and watch the growth.
Ponder the truth that is GoldLink and listen to “Sober Thoughts” below.
