We’ve been living in the “new school” of rap for quite some time, perhaps even the “new new school”. A freshly minted set of artistic lyricists, emcees and energetic party starters has descended upon the rap game (with the likes of Chance the Rapper leading the pack), and they’re taking it by storm – a wild blizzard of voracious ad-libs, tongue twisting rhymes and undeniable distinction.
An even newer name is ready to join the ranks, and he goes by the moniker “GoldLink”. The Virgina-based, rhyme-slinging melody maker has enjoyed a remarkable string of audio single releases since last fall, and his growth and talent have never faced my doubts. With his newest release, he has all but cemented himself as my new favorite rapper on the rise. “One Step Back” pulses with Disclosure-esque style, a feat accomplished by producers Galimatias & Joppe. Together, the trio embark on a sweet and soulful journey through hip-hop performances and deep dance halls, leaving the listener suspended in a trance, waiting for more.
