The Beast Coast movement stays growing as Brooklyn trio Flatbush Zombies deliver their latest project, the BetterOffDEAD mixtape. Actually, this is more in line with the free albums we’ve come to expect from bubbling acts, who would rather give their music away than burst out the gate with projects featuring a price tag. It’s a wise move, of course, because it also allows those same acts to drop full-fledged albums without worrying about sample clearance issues.
And as you’ll hear on BetterOffDEAD, Zombies rapper/producer Erick Arc Elliott certainly has a way with flipping samples to craft a variety of backdrops, though this is primarily a darker-sound record. That’s clear from opening track “Amerikkkan Pie” and on joints like the aptly titled “Drug Parade” with Danny Brown, standout single “Palm Trees“, and uber-gully “Club Soda” with Action Bronson. While Elliott handles a bulk of the beats on here, there are two exceptions thanks to Harry Fraud and Obey City.
