Firstly, I understand that the average music fan expects at least a small amount of free music from their favorite artists. That’s a given in today’s climate: it’s something we all do as musicians to keep people checking for us!
My point with the Elaquent situation however is this:
There is PLENTY of free music from Elaquent for people to sample and discover before they commit to buying anything. Dude has put out more free material than most. There are three editions of In Color, the Oldies compilation, the Freebies release…..not to mention countless free tracks on compilations and his Soundcloud page. So saying that “I wouldn’t have discovered you if I hadn’t bootlegged your EP” is bullshit. The guy is everywhere. Shame of you for being a lazy listener and not digging for the good stuff.
Real “fans” don’t bootleg their favorite artists. They support them. I can’t think of a simpler way to put it than that.
I for one am an Elaquent FAN – I have every digital download and physical release he’s ever put out. I’m proud to say that I buy every release: I believe in the music he makes and I want to support him for that reason. That’s what being a fan is.
Yours sincerely,
