Last week’s news of a new Roots album, Undun, got me thinking about the fact that they have pretty much released good-to-classic material ever since dropping Organix in 1993. I mean, say what you will about that album, The Tipping Point, or whichever Roots record you feel like hating on, but you cannot deny the fact that the Philly crew knows how to make an album. There’s no questioning that. While that’s an easy statement to make, it’s not quite as simple to narrow down exactly which Roots record is the best. Well, at least I thought that before asking y’all to pick your favorite. I had a feeling a certain album would win, but I didn’t think it would be such a clear victory.
Hit the skip to see which Roots album won.
And the winner is…
THINGS FALL APART
It wasn’t even close for any of the other albums in the Roots’ storied catalog. Sure 1995’s Do You Want More?!!!??! came kind of close, but it didn’t even have half of the votes that ’99’s Things Fall Apart received. I’m not terribly surprised that the album won — it is universally referred to as the Roots’ classic — but still, I didn’t think it would kick every other record’s ass. You can revisit the awesomeness that is Things Fall Apart by watching the video for “The Next Movement” below.

thanks dude
illadelph was fucking great
Wow. You know how to ask the hard questions.
But i have to disagree with the results. For me Illadelph Halflife is the greatest Roots album. From start to finish its nothing but raw jazzy boom bap hip hop.
and its got one of my favorite hip hop records of the 90s ‘What They Do’ .
You cant go wrong with any of the 90s Roots records as number 1.
re checking my list of my top 50 greatest hip hop records Illadelph Halflife comes in at number 34 and Things Fall Apart comes in at 49.
Great Poll idea though.

Seriously. Flawless!
that’s like 8 straight tracks of HEAT, son
I picked this because at a certain point, right after that track with most def, which i think is track 5, you really can’t hit the skip button, until after the posse cut with Beanie Sigel and Dice Raw, cuz every song in between is a BANGER
