Over the past few years we’ve shown love to West Coast producer Equalibrum primarily for his work with one of our favorite rappers, Intuition. You might recall that he was behind all but two of the beats on 2010’s stellar Girls Like Me. Well, since then, the duo has continued crafting music together while doing things on their own, too.
And that’s what leads us to Parallel, the brilliant solo debut from Equalibrum. He’s made it clear that this is no beat tape but an instrumental album, something you’ll discover yourself when the warm brass hits your ear drums on “Warm Welcome”. From there, the project swells, soars, bumps, and drifts across a sea of choice samples and crisper-than-crisp percussion. Some highlights include the smoky, spaghetti Western-leaning “Gunslinger”; the acoustic guitar-heavy “The Sunset”; and the cinematic, building “Departure”.
