More and more, Philadelphia has been putting itself on the map as a haven for offbeat, forward-thinking producers and musicians, and this EP from Elegant Animals all but confirms it. Spectrum Nocturnal, released for free via Bandcamp, has been referred to as electronic soul, and that label suits this EP perfectly. Clean, jazzy (and yes, elegant) production sets the scene for suave soul vocals- no overblown R&B cliches here, just pure, smooth, musical singing over compelling, slightly sparse beatwork.
Jangly guitars and spacey synth pads make for a decidedly candlelit affair, as any record that has “-soul” in its description should be, but there’s an ever-so-slight extraterrestrial undertone to this one as well, with the odd echo on the vocal or beat-repeat in the production giving Spectrum Nocturnal tastefully experimental flourishes.
