You may recall us gushing about Spectrum Nocturnal, the lush, dignified debut EP from Philly avant-soul trailblazers Elegant Animals a couple months back. They’re back, this time dropping a free stream of new track “A Ghost” via Bandcamp in advance of its appearance on a compilation to benefit charity website Humankindnessoverflowing.org.
“A Ghost” picks up right where Spectrum Nocturnal left off, juxtaposing deep, pleasantly weird and ever-so-slightly experimental production with a Top 40-worthy R&B vocal. Smooth and calming without being cliched or boring, the production is inventive and forward-thinking while remaining accessible and downright charming. Elegant Animals are demonstrating that they’ve got the recipe to make slow jams for smart people, something a lot of acts would kill for.
