El-P Shares His Favorite Albums of 2013

el-p-laptopBefore we get around to sharing our own year-end lists, I’ve decided to highlight someone else’s picks for the best albums of 2013. El-P just hopped on his Twitter account and rattled off a spontaneous list of his favorite records that have been released in the past 12 months or so. And if you have been following his tweets, you might not be surprised by his choices. Personally, I’m now motivated to listen to a few that I overlooked, like Yo La Tengo’s Fade for one.

Here are El’s picks:

Oh, El also loved everything that Alchemist produced, like this, this, and this.

Also if you want to debate any of these with El, just chill:

i peeped it via spotify and it sounded like he was bored. I dont really dig Mighty Mi’s production much. im a huge Cage fan, and i can respect EL showing love for a friend, but i think thats where the reality of it sits, supporting a friend. The record sounded uninspired, and like he was going through the motions. So, while it wasnt AWFUL, def not anything i felt like going back to.

El is friends with James McNew from Yo La Tengo. I think he played bass on “I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead” and maybe “Cancer 4 Cure” too. “Fade” is pretty good, but it’s nowhere close to “I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One” or “I Am Not Afraid of Long Fucking Album Titles and I Will Beat Your Ass.”

All in all though, for a hastily compiled albums list with blatantly nepotist overtones, it’s not bad. Nice to see him showing love for QOTSA.

That YLT album is pretty solid. Slow, but solid.

The list is ok but it just sounds like it’s him giving props to his homies. Depeche Mode and Yo La Tengo are surprising tho.
