For this latest project, the undeniably gifted Thelonious Martin has linked with frequent collaborator Evan Holt for a new (and free!) album, The Temptations. While we haven’t written about the San Diego rapper before on Potholes, I’ve been waiting on this effort to drop to introduce him to y’all. Holt spits with a laid-back cool, which is a perfect complement for Martin’s soulful, looping boom-bap instrumentals. That’s apparent as soon as opener “Small Steps” glides out of your speakers and breezes along through the Roy Ayers-sampling “Sunshine”. Everything in between (and after) is nice, too, but I just really dug those cuts.
