When Los Angeles’ Proximal Records reached out to producers for Beat Stew Volume Five, they had one request: Make something in the realm of “dance music.” Sure enough, what they got back in return, more than 25 (!) tracks, is made for booty-shakin’, two-steppin’, and the like.
The compilation is brimming with the type of tunes that would make boogie ambassador Dam-Funk smile. And that’s true right from the jump. Steven Cheung’s “Space Travels” gets the project going with intergalactic synthesizers and gnarly grooves while Mat/matix’s “P.C.H.” is made for late-night drives down, well, the Pacific Coast Highway after which the track is named. And how about Benedek’s video game-flipping “Wavrunner”? OOF.
It’s not all immediately funky or dance floor-ready stuff, though most of it is. Co.fee, for one, delivers a crunchy neck-breaker in “Farsi”, which is an instant favorite, and Blue Cube (whoever you are!) supplies an incomprehensibly shuffling tune with “Leopard”.
