I first heard of Dominique Young Unique from my friend JJS’s blog It’s The Money Shot and I finally got around to listening to her mixtape over the weekend. Coming from Florida, Dominique does what I’d describe as electro-rap. You know, the stuff that Kid Sister became recognized for and the stuff that Kanye briefly flirted with to break free from his chipmunk soul shackles.
Some may say that particular wave is over, but those people are likely the ones that got off the train when Mr. West traded his bear for a bleeding heart. It’s a sub-genre that is far from exhausting all of its possibilities and it’s nice to hear a new voice in the crowd, especially one from the Gunshine state. Hopefully Dominique can supplant Trina in Florida the way Minaj did Lil’ Kim.
