discussion Discussion Poll: Worst Live Performer

With Rock the bells 2009 lineup just being announced, I think we are all pretty excited for upcoming summer concerts. While I know most of us have been to some dope concerts, we can also recall some shows we’d rather erase from memory. Outside of The Roots, Common and few other hip-hop acts it is hard to say what your going to get at a hip-hop show. In today’s discussion poll we wanted to get your vote on the worst live performer. While some of the choices may seem out of place, the below names have come up in conversations so let us know.

@ N/A (No Alias) I’ve heard about Madlib a few times and your comments on point. He’s really hit or miss live.

For me it would definitely be Jay Electronica last summer at Rock The Bells. For a guy without an album on the biggest summer tour, he couldn’t have been anymore arrogant. He kept feuding with the crowd, the sound man, and eventually threw his mic into the crowd. Supernatural had to go into the crowd to get it after his performance. Needles to say, he was booed off the stage for that bullshit. He better humble himself and get it together because he was really bad.

    Thanks for the comments y’all.
    1ne.

I voted DOOM man. I would only enjoy his live performances because of the music, but dude is mad awkward on stage to me.

I’ve only see one of the artists listed, Talib Kweli, and even though prior to seeing him perform all I heard was bad things about his recent live show, I thought he was solid. Apparently I caught his show around the same time he apparently started getting better as a lot of the opinions I were reading said he was improving (This was around 06ish).

I went to my local radio station’s summer/winter music concerts a few times (both times really cause Kanye was performing) and I’d have to say the worst I’ve ever seen was a tie between Plies & Lil’ Wayne (and I’m not even a Wayne hater, I just think his live show kinda sucked)

I voted “other” for Madlib. Brilliant producer, but an awful live performer. I know many people don’t care for his rhymes to begin with, but personally I think he’s aight, I’ve heard much worse.

Anyway, the 2 times I saw him perform with Dilla for Jaylib (at the El Rey and Rock the Bells 04) he was missing/forgetting bars of rhymes at a time, and instead of at least TRYING to cover up the fact he messed up, he would just stay silent until he could catch a part he remembered. You can tell rhyming on stage is out of his comfort zone.

I didn’t vote for Kweli, but I can vouch to the fact that he can sound pretty bad in concert. He might bring a lot of energy, but sometimes he gets off-beat and incoherent with his overly-hoarse voice.

I’ve seen Kweli twice and thought he was incredibly dope.
Jay Electronica gets my vote, because the one time I saw him he was absolutely terrible. Awful. Embarassing.
