19 Responses to “Discussion Poll: Most Overrated Emcees”
I sadly had to go with ‘Pac, even if he’s one of my favorites. I personally don’t think too many people overrate Kanye because I think it’s understood he’s an average emcee with some good lines here and there.
Just because someone is over rated does not mean they are bad. Pac isn’t bad at all and yes he is completely influential, but he can still be over rated and be good. It doesnt have to be one or the other. That’s just my two cents.
The is just silly calling tupac the most influential rapper ever… the dude put out entire albums with filler tracks. He had tons of corny lines and hooks. He is one of the biggest hypocritical, contradictory emcees of all time. Preaching peace and love on one album then busting gats on the next. Yeah he had his fair share of classic records, but in NO way is he underrated, that is just silly. This has a lot to do with personal opinion, but I can’t even listen to half the dudes tracks because the production is just so terrible. That might not have much to do with the emcee, but in reality it does. Part of being a good rapper is picking good production.
And if you call Z-Ro the best rapper alive you must just be drunk, who gives a damn who he emulated…
And Primo’s favorite emcee being Lil Wayne? Primo as in DJ Premier? What does that even mean? How does that have any relevance? I mean the dude worked with Guru, in my opinion one of the most lackluster emcees out there. Dude repeats a lot of the same messages and has a very weak flow… Sure he is a great producer but that doesn’t mean anything to me.
I remain with Tupac… just my opinion. I respect the impact he has made on hip-hop, but he has made almost no impact on me.
Yea, im gonna have to go with Pac also… and for the record to add onto what Reyn just said (and to dispute what “So Stupid” said, Lil Wayne ripped a LOT of Jay-Z’s style, so in reality he really DOES sound like others before him…
I was torn on this one between ‘Pac and Wayne. In the end, even though Tupac is definitely an understandable selection, I had to choose Lil Wayne. At least Tupac made a handful of songs that I can listen to and love. I’ve yet to hear a Lil Wayne song that’s every blown me away. The man has one of (though I know people my disagree with me on this) THE WORST voices I’ve ever been forced to endure and I’ve never understood how churning out a million mixtapes with half-assed freestyles is supposed to be impressive.
@Big Stu THANK YOU! I have been thinking some thing, but just assumed I didn’t get it… I heard so much about him and then when I listened to him I didn’t understand what the fuss was about. He had a horrible voice (I though) and everything I heard recorded by him (I think I only heard Carter III) sounded really badly done… no compression, bad delivery…. atleast I thought so… did I miss something?
Hey, I run blogs, too, I know you do it because it works. I meant no offense by it, just registering my own weariness with these conversations.
As an artist? It’d be interesting to me if you used this platform to get actual feedback from fans. Like “How long should a hip hop album be?” or “What’s the best hip hop blog?” or “What social networks do you actually still use in 2009?” — that sorta thing.
Either way, all your other content is dope, so keep doing whatever works.
This one came down to two people, and not surprisingly, the top two choices thus far. 2Pac and Lil’ Wayne.
Lets start with Lil’ Wayne. He is most definitely overrated, however, at the same time he is underrated. I think it all has to do with age and what type of rap fan you are. Obviously the average mainstream hip-hop fan age 16-24 is going to think Lil’ Wayne is the best thing since the internet but the more die-hard, old school, “true” hip-hop fan is going to think the exact opposite; that he is garbage. I fall somewhere in the middle of this. I think the people who think he is the GOAT have no idea what they are talking about where the people who say he is complete trash really just haven’t given him a chance. He’s got some good shit. Not on some deep-thoughted, game-changing shit, but entertaining, clever rhymes that people can at least get a smirk out of.
2Pac on the other hand is immediately placed into Top 5 status as if his place was cemented on September 13, 1996. The fact is that 2Pac’s career has been overrated because of a historical beef (if we can even call it that, it was really Pac just pissed off because of false speculations) and an unfortunate night in Vegas. Yes, his music had great messages, but like someone mentioned above he’d be telling girls to keep their head up one minute and saying some derogatory shit to them the next. Plus, I never appreciated his fake gangster steez when he was an art school student who never even got in trouble with the police until after he became a rapper. The image and legacy of 2Pac is a lot stronger than the man’s catalog.
Now, first of all this list of overrated emceez has some really good point but it has some bad ones too…I really think Eminem is overrated..why?not cause he ain’t a great rapper…no he is….but him being white and all in a originaly black industry as hip hop lifted his image up…lil wayne is overrated beacuse he has a smooth voice but the rest of him is shit…
And now regarding The only rapper that made it in The Guiness Book of Records by being the highest selling emcee ever…and im not talking about sales here…but imagine if he is the highest sellin rapper it means that people loved him and his shit and bought it….
U are talkin here about Pac being overrated but what about BIG???Why isn’t him in this top?he was a great MC….BIG won prizes and the Best Hip Hop in 95…that was all..why then?oh, thats right Pac was in jail.Still his Me Against The World album spent 4 week on no1…now that TUPAC thats MC thats Hip Hop..
If Tupac is overrated he isn’t because his music….he is because his Legacy and of course the famous 7th Day Theory that he’ll be back and shit like that….But as a emcee poet actor activist Tupac was and will be the Greatest…So dont be comin here sayin that he’s overrated…he trully was loved by the world..In 96 he said he wanted to run for presidency or support a candidate….and in the next few months he died shot??!c’mon how stupid is that! Its obvoius The gouvernment was afraid of him of his power….
All you motherfuckers here dissin Tupac callin him like that…be fair!Think with ya head in a stricly hip hop way….dont diss the man just cause you listen to Eminem BIG Nas shit like that…
This is tha truth…Fo real peaze

It was tough…. Can I just vote all? I picked Lil Wayne because he has been inflated the most out of all of them.
I went with tupac, never understood the fascination and I never will. Dude just isn’t that good…
I went with Eminem, dope lyricist terrible catalog.
Went with ‘Pac. It’s a shame, but, “that’s just the way it is”.
You are all so stupid.
Eminem’s catalog is legendayr.
Pac is the most influential rapper ever, before him nobody sounded like him, after him everybody sounds like him.
Z-Ro who is the best rapper alive, used to emulate Pac, before he developed his own style.
And listen to Pac on any track with Heltah Skeltah or Wu Tang or any of those cats… He TEARS THEM UP.
Pac is underated.
And Lil Wayne is Primo’s favorite MC, not to mention he ALSO sounds like nobody before him.
I can’t believe I am the only one who voted for TI, TI shouldnt even be on a list with the rest of these legendary MC’s

“I can’t believe I am the only one who voted for TI, TI shouldnt even be on a list with the rest of these legendary MC’s”
Not to nitpick, but Kanye definitely isn’t a legendary MC.

…so you guys are just gonna keep doing this every week, huh? Arf.
I think there will be a new topic next week… send requests to @soulsupreme, the leader of the Poll!

Respect! Thanks for the feedback homie, it will be taken into consideration.

I’ll go with Pac.
I voted Jay-Z.
