Watch Episode Six of ‘Diggin’ In The Carts’: The End Of An Era

As all good things must come to an end, here we have the sixth and final episode of RBMA‘s Diggin’ In The Carts documentary series on video game music. For this one, which is fittingly called “The End of An Era,” the topics include the conclusion of the chiptune era (thanks to the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn) in addition to the compositions heard in two classic games, Tekken and Metal Gear Solid.

As for Tekken, you learn about why its music was very clubby and uptempo. It turns out that the game’s sound director, Kakano Kakino, wanted to add a feeling of exhilaration to the experience. She then introduces some of the composers who worked on the fighting game while it’s revealed that the Tekken OST became pretty popular across the globe. I never played Tekken as much as other fighters, so this definitely made me want to get the latest installment (as long as I can afford it lol). If not that, I need to hear that soundtrack.

I won’t spoil the rest of the episode—sadly, I’m unable to anyway because my laptop is dying right now—but as someone who played MGS and loved it, I can guarantee it’s worth sticking around for that part of the video. You can watch the final episode below. Also, hey, check out my video game-specific site Distant Arcade. We just wrote about NCAA Football 2000 and one of the craziest speedruns I’ve ever seen.
