I always feel weird when I hear about a soul artist putting out new music when it seems the current state of music is No Country For Musicians Who Made Their Best Music When Motown Made Classics . But I love it when I’m pleasantly surprised by the new material (see: Gil Scott-Heron). Coffey gets some help from guest vocalists on his new self-titled album, including everyone’s favorite white guy who croons like Gerald Ford is calling the shots, Mayer Hawthorne.
