DaVinci – “Concrete Jungle Juice”

davinci DaVinci Concrete Jungle JuiceWhile this West Coast MC had been in the game for several years prior, DaVinci caught my attention in early 2010 when he dropped the fantastic (and free) The Day the Turf Stood Still. From the fantastic production by his STWBRDS collective cohorts, such as Al Jieh, to the swift, to-the-throat lyricism from DaVinci himself, the project surpassed any expectations I had for something coming from the Bay Area. Thankfully, this is a rapper who is more steeped in the true boom-bap origins rather than relying on fads or cheap gimmicks to make a quick buck. And today — a day late, I know — we have the gritty video for “Concrete Jungle Juice”. I might prefer a few other tracks off the record to this one, but that doesn’t mean I don’t sometimes skip forward just to spin this. Get familiar and download the album at his Bandcamp if you haven’t yet. Or — here’s a novel idea — buy it on Amazon or iTunes.

I don’t totally dig this, but as somebody from Oakland this comment: “the project surpassed any expectations I had for something coming from the Bay Area”…pissed me off. No, need to hate on the Bay, hyphy music has done been dead.

Not hating, just an observation as an outsider looking in and only hearing BS from that area for a while. Didn’t mean any disrespect.
