Rapper/singer/producer hybrids are always a mixed bag. Most musicians can rarely perfect one talent over the course of their career, let alone three simultaneously. However, that’s the colossal undertaking David Ashley commits to on his solo LP, Perfect Dark. Ashley is a member of the Chicago R&B collective JODY, and on his debut it feels like he’s flexing his newfound autonomy. Perfect Dark is an intriguing listen, that’s for damn sure, and it’s overflowing with new ideas, concepts, and emotions. This release begs multiple listens as Ashley valiantly steps into the solo spotlight.
