Upstart British beatsmith Cypria brought us an EP this week, his second of 2012, and it’s certainly worth a spin or two. He first caught our attention back in January with “Sunrise”, a collab with fellow Brit Handbook, which was a sparse, minimal little track with gently loping acoustic guitars and less-is-more drum work.
His new EP, My Gray Skies Blue, fleshes the sound out a little, with heavy kicks and sharp snares complementing smoothly chopped vocal samples and a couple slick MCs featured. Supreme Sol, in particular, absolutely slays his feature on the early-album neck snapper “Oh My”, sustaining an alarmingly rapid-fire flow over the hypnotic beat longer than you’d ever think possible.
