Curren$y & The Jets – Jet World Order
Jet Life Records: 2011
“It’s Jets Foo’!” That phrase has flown through various tracks in my speakers over the past three years. With Curren$y as captain to a smoked out multi-thousandaire luxury plane, the Jet Life has assisted Spitta on some of the slickest tunes to emerge from the new generation of rappers. The brand is simple: weed, fly gear, pretty women, muscle cars, and traveling the world. Those topics loosely swirl around themes of street and rap hustling, and playing it cool in tough environments. It’s either your cup of tea or it isn’t. On Jet World Order things don’t change in the slightest. The only change is that Spitta cools it out in first class as Young Roddy and Trademark Da Skydiver man the cock pit… pause.
All the usual suspects are here: Monsta Beatz and Nesby Phips (with some newcomers) control the boards; Dza, Fiend, Young Wiz and of course Spitta lay down verses; but this is Trademark and Roddy’s showcase of smooth street kid raps over dusty but digital soundscapes. Cookin’ Soul’s “Paper Habits” creeps in with it mesmerizing vibraphone and ivory keys loop pinned down by a strutting bassline and drums. Both rappers use the beat to speak on why they grind for the big faces and mute the naysayers. The Show Off produced “1st Place” is a Spitta assisted self explanatory track of lush pimpery driven by a funky guitar sample and a well placed and subtle vocal loop. “The Set” is a stark street anthem that finds the duo with DZA providing a slight glimpse into their inner experiences only to comfortably boast about the fruits of their labor and life style.
This is exactly the type of music Jet Life’s fans are expecting, and like a good business the crew provides them with a quality product. While Roddy and Trademark won’t win over those who come into Jet World Order considering them Curren$y’s weed carriers; or wow traditionalist with their word play or technical proficiency; they are grounded emcees who play to their strengths: the tone of their voices and precise control of their flows. It also doesn’t hurt that they have a team of producers that provides the type of suave knock that resembles the crystalline purple hairs that puts weed head on their asses. Jet Life’s Jet World Order shows it’s more than its most popular part, Curren$y, and continues a streak that is near 10 albums and mixtapes deep of quality rap since mid 2009.
