Some voices were born to rap. Cozz, the latest signee to join J.Cole‘s Dreamville Records, has such a voice. When the Cali spitter slings rhymes, his words ring with a guttural, rough edge. It’s not all for show, though — the energetic venom is calculated. Over the past few years, far too many hip-hop artists have turned to adlibs, non-sequiturs, and audio effects to mask increasingly subpar bars. We don’t mean to pan all acts who litter their work with vocal tricks and techniques, but the trend has begun to tire itself.
Rest assured, this is certainly not the case with Cozz, who’s an outlier if we’ve ever seen one. When he spits, “Got the whole world waitin’ on a n***a,” it’s a lofty assertion, sure, but he possesses the gravitas to make it work. After all, this hyperbolic belief in himself has brought the rising star this far. Hopefully, when his album drops tomorrow, the world will follow his phrase and take the time to appreciate one of music’s most exciting new faces.
