We have some good news from Common‘s camp today: The Chicago native has officially signed with Def Jam Records under producer No I.D.’s imprint, Artium. Aside from this being good news for Com’ himself, it’s also great for all of his fans. The signing coincides with the fact he’s releasing his new album, Nobody’s Smiling, on July 22. It’s his first full-length since 2011’s pretty damn good The Dreamer/The Believer and includes the recently dropped “Kingdom“, which features a great guest spot from Vince Staples.
Here’s what Common had to say about the signing (via his website)
“I’m honored to team up with No ID and be a part of the Artium and Def Jam family. Creating this album and signing to Def Jam feels like a new beginning for me. I feel like a new artist because I created this album with the purpose to give back to my city and to the culture of hip hop. Def Jam is part of the foundation of hip hop and being able to work with No ID was returning to my foundation now with new energy and new hunger.”
