Cheerleaders are a bit like fish because the environments they can survive in are restricted. You take one off of the sidelines of a sporting event or out of a high school and there is nothing left to cheer. They simply flop around until they have a Jessie Spano meltdown where they’re so excited until they’re not. But one environment where they can thrive is the alternate dimension of music, so a band with that name works. Cheerleader is a duo from Hartford, Conn., who just released their self-titled debut consisting of two indie-pop songs that work pretty well for the seven minutes it lasts. The tracks are as upbeat as a teen who didn’t get the dreaded summer school instructions sent to them by their high school. Or a fish who got to stay in its environment (if it had a human brain).
