The revivalist movement of funk and soul continues to move forward thanks to efforts of Daptone and other throwback labels. Developing artists like Charles Bradley, nostalgia and innovation meet halfway for a delightfully familiar experience through time and sound. In 2011, Bradley’s debut album hit the streets, setting in motion a documentary called Soul Of America about his life’s journey filled with various struggles and successes.
2013 is setting up to be an even bigger year for Charles, as he gets set to embark on yet another musical expedition by way of upcoming full-length Victim Of Love. The first single is called “Strictly Reserved For You”, a moaning, deep piece of soul music. Bradley’s gritty vocals are filled with character, aged and primed like a vintage bottle of red. And his songwriting is nothing to sleep on either, as each repetition of the chorus is met with equally revealing stories of love and heartache.
