The sound and scope of Cee-Lo Green’s upcoming The Lady Killer gets bigger and weirder with every leak. First he gave us a pair of retro-leaning soulful genre exercises in the Youtube smash “Fuck You” and the blues inflected “Old-Fashioned”, both of which continued the 60’s-soul-fed-through-modern-production ethos he and Danger Mouse created and perfected on those first two Gnarls Barkley records. But with the latest, “Bright Lights, Bigger City”, Lo fast forwards to the 80s. “Bright Lights, Bigger City” nicks the rhythm section from MJ’s “Billie Jean” and the hyperactive strings from a typical disco barn burner and then bombs out the track with massive, flatulent synths. It’s weird, but it works.
