Best Downloads of the Week (2/8/13)

Lee Bannon | Caligula Theme Music 2.7.5  [EP]

lee-bannon-caligula-275Not that he’s ever made lighter music, but Lee Bannon sure is embracing his darker side on Caligula Theme Music 2.7.5. And why not? Dude’s got a knack for putting together stark soundscapes, which here get complemented by members of Pro Era and Raider Klan. It’s a lil’ rough around the edges, too, which makes it sound like you’re listening to some dudes record straight to the tape after getting nice and high.

You can download the EP at Bandcamp.

Shigeto & Friends | Beats 4 Dilla  [Compilation]

shigeto-feetTo celebrate the legacy of J Dilla, Shigeto reached out to some of his close producer friends to put together a collection of new beats. The resulting project, Beats 4 Dilla, is a raw display of pure talent as the Detroit native collaborates with Skywlkr, Devonwho, Mux Mool, and Josef Deas (aka Shigeto’s brother). It’s a celebration of Dilla’s versatility and relentless output, and we absolutely adore it.

You can download the tracks at Soundcloud.

Clipping | Midcity  [Album]

clipping-midcityHands down, the biggest surprise of the week was Clipping’s Midcity album. This shit hit me in the gut in the best way possible amid layers of fuzz, harsh noise, and some of the best rapping you’ve never heard. But wait, let’s change that. Anyone with a love for Shabazz Palaces and/or Death Grips will gush over this, especially because you’ll get the chance to share with your friends who, I’m guessing, haven’t had a chance to dive into Clipping’s madness.

You can download Midcity on Bandcamp.

Kilo Kish | K+  [Album]

kilo-kish-k-mixtapeIf there’s one thing to be said about coy NYC rapper-singer Kilo Kish, it’s that she’s got one hell of a team in her corner. Case in point: the immense lineup on her new K+ album. The thing features a number of artists we love here at Potholes, including Earl Sweatshirt, SBTRKT, Star Slinger, Vince Staples, and the Internet, among others. Need I say more?

You can download K+ at LiveMixtapes.

Kool A.D. | 19  and 63  [Mixtapes]

kool-ad-19The don Kool A.D. dropped a pair of mixtapes this past week because, well, he really must love us. They contain a total of 38 never-before-heard tracks, many of which are collaborations with an intriguing cast of guests. You’ll hear Open Mike Eagle, Lakutis, Meyhem Lauren, Busdriver and more sharing airtime with Kool, who shows off a killer ear for beats. I mean, dude snagged an instrumental from Ad-Rock, who apparently handed over the beat for an older Das Racist project.

You can download 63 here and 19 here.
