The timing of this lawsuit couldn’t be more perfect. Just one day after we reported that the late MCA’s will prohibited the use of Beastie Boys‘ music in commercials, the surviving members have sued Monster Energy over the unlicensed use of their work. Apparently the energy drink giant used portions of “Sabotage”, “So Whatcha Want”, and “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun” in a campaign for their 2012 Ruckus in the Rockies event. It’s not clear how much the Beasties are suing for, but here’s a portion of the complaint:
“The text accompanying Monster’s internet postings, video and MP3 conveyed to consumers the impression that Beastie Boys permitted the use of their name and intellectual property, and participated in connection with Monster’s promotion of its products and events.”
