Intuition “ruined” two excellent tracks last week when he injected bars into Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” and Mayer Hawthorne’s “Make Her Mine”. Well, the California-by-way-of-Alaska MC wasn’t done. This week, he’s revealed two more tracks of his I Ruined These Songs For You mixtape. The first features him spitting over The Black Keys’ “Psychotic Girl”, another dope-as-hell choice, and Portishead’s gorgeous “Humming” (excellent pick, again, Intuition). Get your mixtape on, people, and enjoy Intuition’s creative take on some of the best non-hip-hop tracks of the past 15 years. The full project drops March 23. Hit the jump for the track list.
Here’s the latest project from the homie Theo Martins, one of Rhode Island’s finest MCs. He’s destined to make a name for himself outside of the Ocean State and, actually, that’s kind of already happened already. His upcoming project with $port is dropping on Hall of Justus and Martins is on his way to SXSW right now. Channel Surfin’ is the prelude to Martins and $port’s HoJ release and provides listeners with an array of sounds, from a Foals remix to his own take on a Flying Lotus joint. The Rhody MC is joined by a slew of talented like-minded acts on here, too, including RAtheMC, U-N-I, and Rapper Big Pooh.
Producer Amp Live, who many know as one-half of Zion I, is more than just a boom-bap beats creator. The guy also apparently loves to remix the hell out of whatever he can get his hands on. His most notable remix work saw him tackling tracks off Radiohead’s In Rainbows for the controversial Rainydayz Remixes project. But Amp Live didn’t stop there. In between crafting more beats for Zion I and his own solo record, he tried his hand at tracks off Why?’s Eskimo LP. The result is One Dark Eskimo Remixes, which technically dropped almost two months ago but just recently caught my eye. Enjoy!
Read this with a Jerry Seinfeld tone, please: What’s the deal with all these rappers tackling indie rock songs? After we showed you a glimpse of Intuition’s upcoming mixtape earlier this week, we now bring Lushlife’s take on Washed Out’s “Feel It All Around”. Like Intuition, Lushlife’s version retains all the elements of the original track. So, in a sense, it’s like a mash-up of Lush’s gruff new verses and Washed Out shimmery instrumental and hook. If you can’t tell from my write-up, I’m definitely feeling this and wish I could make it down to SXSW to see him perform. Ah well, at least I have this and his two albums to keep me company.
Say hello to the first two leaks off Intuition’s upcoming side project dubbed I Ruined These Songs For You. This free mixtape brings it back to the day you would make actual cassettes for your friends or a girl who caught your eye. But instead of straight-up tracks, Intuition spits over portions of them with complementary lyrics that maintain the original song’s tone and story. There are no chopped samples or anything like that, just some great cuts from across the gamut — I’m talking from soul to indie rock — with this MC adding a lil’ flair. The first two leaks feature Intuition going in over Grizzly Bear’s fantastic “Two Weeks” and Mayer Hawthorne’s silky “Make Her Mine”. Enjoy and let us know your thoughts. And, of course, check back soon to get the full project.
To prepare the world for his upcoming Landlords and Lullabies album dropping in April, Reason has put together this mixtape of 15 unreleased tracks. Fans of the Ocean State Sampler will know Reason as one of the talented MCs featured on that release and others will of course know him as a member of the Poorly Drawn People collective.
Stalker Stories features production from Potholes-regular Falside as well as Dox, of Poorly Drawn People, and PhillipDrummond. Reason is joined on the microphone by guests Storm Davis, Dirty Hank, Cas Uno, Esh The Monolith and Intrikit. Check out this free mixtape and be sure to let us know your thoughts!
The team at The Mad Bloggers are working on quite the ambitious (and fantastic) project with “The Journey to Hip-Hop.” Each volume will see the hip-hop site highlighting a different city, with Milwaukee obviously being the first. There are two volumes of music here, too, with tracks from the likes of Taiyamo Denku, JC Poppe, Ka$h, Dana Coppafeel, Haz Solo, and many, many others. And yes, there are two different covers for MKE’s Best to highlight the Draft and Light volumes. I don’t really like light beer, though, so that’s why I’m showing off the Draft one, haha.
