P.SO & 8thW1 – Suicide By Jellyfish [LP]

p.so P.SO & 8thW1 Suicide By Jellyfish [LP]We have heard some leaks from this project over the past month or so along with dealing with the fact it’s been delayed a number of times. But hey, this shit is free, so why complain about getting something for nothing? We’re so spoiled these days. Anywho, here we have P.SO and 8thw1′s latest project, Suicide By Jellyfish, which finds the two AOK Collective members spitting over all types of production. They jack beats from Phantogram, Madlib, Blu Bad Brains, Chester French, and many others to create a new twist on these likely already heard songs. It makes for a slightly nostalgic and altogether solid listen that proves just how talented these damn AOK guys really are.

Soulja Boy – “Pretty Boy Swag” (Lushlife Remix)

lushlife Soulja Boy Pretty Boy Swag (Lushlife Remix)OK, take a deep breath. Please. Just…relax. I know. Soulja Boy? On Potholes? Yeah, this shit is happening. The homie Lushlife shot me over a remix to one of the most absurdly insipid tracks of the past year. And yes, I was skeptical at first considering the original track in question. I mean, “Pretty Boy Swag”? Why, Lushlife, why?! But it turns out this joint is pretty goddamn fresh … OK, maybe not fresh, but still listenable and enjoyable when given a proper beat and music to accompany Soulja Boy’s idiotic “rapping.” I kind of wish Lushlife had rapped on here, instead, but hey, I dig this either way. Rant over. I need my coffee.

Qwel & Maker – “El Camino”

qwel Qwel & Maker El CaminoI don’t know about you, but I was certainly hoping that the duo of Qwel & Maker was going to get back in the studio for a follow-up to last year’s So Be It. And, sure enough, my wish came true as the slightly abstract rapper and producer are bringing us Owl, their third album together, in two weeks. Here we have the first leak, “El Camino”, which floats gorgeously as you take a laid-back drive down nostalgia boulevard. It’s a great choice for a lead single, even if it’s a bit subdued, and hopefully (there I go, hoping again) will gain these two even more fans in the near future.

Darien Brockington – “Rain”

darien brockington Darien Brockington RainChances are, if you’re a hip-hop head at least, you know this man’s name because of his link to Little Brother and the Foreign Exchange. His soulful crooning has graced more records than I can count with those two groups, particularly the latter as his vocals are a crucial element to the sounds of Connected and Leave It All Behind. But Darien Brockington isn’t just a guest singer. Dude’s been steadily building a nice solo career. And most recently, he dropped The Cold Case Files, an album that features the track featured here, “Rain”. We unfortunately don’t have the track available for streaming but what we do have the ridiculously sexy video. If you watch these visuals and hear the song and don’t feel some kind of way afterward, then you must either be celibate or inhuman. Or maybe you’re attracted to horses or some shit.

Big K.R.I.T. – “If I Should Die”

big krit Big K.R.I.T. If I Should DieBig K.R.I.T.’s winning streak continues here with the latest leak from JonnyShipes forthcoming Good Talk Vol. 9 mixtape presented by Cinematic Music Group. I mean, come on, has anything the Meridian, Miss.-based rapper-producer released this past year been nothing but gold? Sure, some might argue his K.R.I.T. Wuz Here had a few too many tracks, but the sequencing and cohesive sound kept it from dragging. And the slew of loose tracks he’s dropped since then have impressive, to say the least. This Marvin Gaye-sampling track, “If I Should Die”, is no different. K.R.I.T. slays it both lyrically and on the production while proving once again that all the buzz surrounding him is completely justified.

You can stream “If I Should Die” after the jump. Props to Billboard.

Black EL & Durkin – Color Commentary [LP]

black el Black EL & Durkin Color Commentary [LP]Up to this point we’ve heard a series of leaks and teasers from this Boston-based duo that have worked as an ample reintroduction to the hip-hop world. The rapper and producer team of Black EL and Durkin also delivered a fresh-as-hell video for lead single “100 Miles” that found them successfully linking with Beyond Measure productions. As a result of this rather impressive promotional push, I have to admit the wait has become increasingly difficult for their Color Commentary project. But now, the wait is over and we’re beyond glad to be sharing this album with you. It features 10 new tracks — wait, did I get that right? A rap album with only 10 tracks?! Yeah, I know, seems unlikely these days, but it’s true. The features are limited, too, albeit effective with Jon Hope, Jelani, and Outasight stopping by. Hope you dig it as much as we do.

Progress Report – “Wake Up”

progress report Progress Report Wake UpWe previously brought to you a contest to win a 7″ vinyl from this Detroit crew led by spitter D. Allie. Although that giveaway has expired by two weeks, that doesn’t mean you should forget about Progress Report and their latest single, “Wake Up”. The aptly titled cut is given the video treatment here and just in case you didn’t know what they were rapping about on here, you will probably figure it out after checking the visuals. Also, damn, D., I didn’t know you got on your goofball shit like that.

Poetic Republic – The Blackest Man Alive [Mixtape]

poetic republic Poetic Republic The Blackest Man Alive [Mixtape]Talk about waking up to some nice surprises today. Shit. First, we had that blunted-as-fuck Domo Genesis album for your listening pleasure. And now, we bring you Poetic Republic’s latest effort, a street-album/mixtape dubbed The Blackest Man Alive. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, this group shows flashes of brilliance akin to the Rawkus era, particularly the Black Star record, with some dusty hints of Binary Star thrown in. At least, that’s the vibe I’m getting while spinning through The Blackest Man Alive, a 13-track project filled with rhymes and production that feel throwback but exude a forward-thinking mentality.

Hit the skip to download The Blackest Man Alive. You can stream “The Media” below. I’ve also included a link to their 2008 album, The Natural Progression of Things. Major, major props to the home RM London for the heads up!
