Parisian pop scientist Astrobal has his criminally overlooked 2011 Plug Research release Poetry And Science Fiction reworked by 11 of his friends on the evocatively titled Reworked. Standouts include (but are in no way limited to) the uptempo, Team Zissou-esque spin that Flairs puts on “Le Continent”, the fuzzy, laid-back boom-bap treatment that Daahood gives the same track, Charlie Cole’s dignified acoustic take of “Trains”, which displays shades of Jose Gonzalez, and ever-versatile Chicago duo Tensei’s joyously strange rework of “My Girl”, melding heavy hip-hop kick drums with fuzzy guitars straight out of the mid-’90s alt-pop renaissance. Alternating dreamy with driving, floaty with funky, Astrobal’s extended Plug Research family demonstrates on Reworked that, in the right hands, remix possibilities are indeed endless.
