I’m not sure what it’s looking like in your neck of the woods, but here in New York City, it’s a dank, overcast Wednesday. Whole lotta hump day exhaustion and reflective sighing going on. Anyways, poking around Bandcamp this morning I found the perfect soundtrack to my midweek malaise. Applegreen’s Record Theatre has been out for a minute now (it came out in April), but it’s brand new to me and possibly to you. Applegreen, formerly known as Odetta, is a Salt Lake City based DJ who’s been cutting up records for a few years now. Record Theatre is a beautiful collision of soulful, jazzy grooves, golden age boom bap, and sexy vinyl hiss, all diced up into a tasty stir fry of sounds. Imagine the lush, hypnotic largess of classic DJ Shadow filtered through the race-to-the-finish-line brevity of producers like Madlib and Oh No. None of Record Theatre‘s fourteen instrumentals lasts much longer than a couple mintues, but everything here is perfectly tuneful and better yet, emotionally engaging. At a relatively brief 28 minutes, Record Theatre will keep you captivated through multiple repeat listens. I’m on my fourth now!
