Album Review: Q-Tip – Kamaal The Abstract (2009)

kamaal_the_abstractAlbum Review: Q-Tip – Kamaal The Abstract (2009)
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Potholes

Never shy to propagate the significance of artistic integrity, Q-Tip has always done things his own way. From his legendary work with A Tribe Called Quest to later solo projects, it would be impossible to accuse the man’s material of bending to label pressure, and perhaps manifested in severe delays to the album’s release, Kamaal The Abstract is no exception to this.

In what is surely his most experimental venture, Q-Tip combines past influences with a deeply creative will moreso than ever before; while the sounds of A Tribe Called Quest are undoubtedly glittered with superb slices of sampled Jazz and Funk, Kamaal The Abstract sees the rapper stepping beyond the confines of Hip-Hop in order to try and create these sounds himself. There are, at times, impressive results, but the album is not without a few lacklustre and sloppy moments that make the album’s overall tightness suffer. For example, ‘Do U Dig U?’ seems undecided between being a chilled out R&B jam or a mystical Jazz epic, and the chorus from the otherwise immense ‘Barely In Love’ drags and pales in comparison to its spectacular verses and production. Tracks like ‘A Million Times’ and ‘Heels’ are generally dull and somewhat repetitive, and at just nine tracks in length, there’s little excuse for the superfluous here. However, fans will be delighted to hear vintage Q-Tip vibes combined with the airy compositions of ‘Abstractisms’ and ‘Even If It Is So’, and even the tracks that have their faults are built upon infectious bass lines and heavenly chords.

Kamaal The Abstract won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, and there are certainly ideas that fall short in their execution, but the project is undoubtedly representative of Q-Tip’s talent and creativity, and proves to be more than deserving of its eventual label release.

  1. lol, this album shits on all the alternative junk people try to hype now a days, and is more interesting than most material by modern rappers new and old! it was the shit when i got made in 2003 and its the shit now. “barely in love” is an incredible song, “do u dig u” is the shit even if it should have been cut at the 3 1/2 minute mark, “even if it is so” is whats up and “heels” and “abstractionisms” are just rockers. easy 4

  2. I like where Tip was going with the sound–I’m just not convinced he got it right. There are times it all comes together and works, but it’s not consistent. If he woulda continued working at this for a few more years, it coulda really developed into something. Course I don’t think that means it would sell better, tho. Not a popular enough sound for the masses, and too different from his body of work for his fan base.

I actually got the bootleg on vinyl last year, had the leaked MP3s for a while. Still need to go cop this new CD–just to support Tip.

This album was a true dissapointment, 3.5 is way too high. more like a 2

  4. The creative juices were flowing. Great album. Sucks that Arista scrapped it because they thought it was too close to sounding like Aquemini….

  5. Im suprised by the negativity too.I dont want to speak for anyone but i feel that the people who dislike it were hoping for typical, pre packaged ‘Tip.Listen with an open mind, artists need to grow!I heard this maybe a year back and i dont know if the tracklist has changed but there are some GREAT songs on this.Barely in love being one of them!

  6. ^^I’ll sit down with it again, you got me curious. I’ve been wrong before.

  7. I have to admit, I am very surprised that people feel so negatively about this album. I actually think it deserved MORE than a 3.5.

It’s got to be my least favorite of anything Q-Tip has done, but I don’t hate it. Just think it could have been slightly better executed in places.

  9. 3.5 is downright generous. This was a frisbee.

  10. everyone knows that i’m a hardcore TRIBE lover! when i first put this on after it’s release, i must say i wasn’t that impressed. the songs were very lackluster not to mention aged. the tracks ‘barely in love’ & ‘a million times’ were begging me to skip ahead and i refuse to listen to ‘caring’. it’s not all terrible though, ‘make it work’ was refreshing for my ears and i enjoyed ‘blue girl’ but maybe that’s just the girl in me. ♥
