Noise is the Trigger – Noise is the Trigger EP
Lewis Recordings: 2010
I really wanted to like this album; I really did. Dagha is one of the most deserving underground artists, and being from Boston, I have all the more reason to push for his success. His full-length albums and numerous guest appearances (most notably with fellow Lewis rapper/producer Edan), have helped Dagha achieve a status of underground spitter-extraordinaire. But his 2010 collaborative effort with Psych Major, Noise is the Trigger, is uncharacteristically, utterly average.
Let it be known, Dagha spits here. His bars are fiery – sometimes to a fault. He goes off on our economic system and pop culture, explains how we all really work for “the man,” and gets a bit nonsensical on “Horn Jam”. The only problem is that at times, he gets a bit too scatterbrained for his own good, veering dangerously off course. However, that’s fitting being that the entire EP is somewhat akin to a speeding car with no brakes. Psych Major tosses in a curious assortment of metal, off-kilter samples, psychedelic (of course), and funk. It’s a strange mix that in all honesty, just doesn’t sound too good.
What we’re left with in the end is seven tracks and roughly 20 minutes of unorganized music. And please don’t get me started on the album’s presentation (artists - if you don’t put care into the presentation of your work, isn’t it safe to say you don’t put much care into the work itself?). Gripes aside, this album is one roaring rollercoaster. Highlights include “WildFellow” and the aforementioned “Horn Jam”.
