Rating: 3 out of 5 Potholes

In an age when it is sometimes difficult to strike up a conversation about hip-hop and not get swept up in a debate over new school versus old school, it is nice to know that there are a few remaining artists who actually bridge the gap. Native Tongue lyricist Dres, most notable as a member of the lauded Black Sheep, is one of those artists. Fortunately, for both the old school heads as well as the new, Dres’ skills on the microphone haven’t faded, or fallen victim to the lure of corporate dinero.

In preparation for his upcoming full-length, The Black Pool of Genius, Dres is giving listeners a taste of what he has to offer this time around with a five-track EP, From the Black Pool of Genius: The Prelude EP. It is upon first listen, an unassuming project. But upon intent listening, it is evident that Dres is rather sharp. On the opening track, “Forever Luvlee”, Dres pledges his allegiance to the hood. He finds irony in the fact that his material possessions seem to contradict his actual social status, yet stands strong as a representative of the streets nonetheless.

“Pretty Bum” appears to be a stereotypical track about the pursuit of a beautiful woman, but actually has deeper social commentary relating to topics of poverty, struggle, and love. It is subtle surprises such as these that make Dres’ words valuable. Furthermore, he has near-impeccable understanding of how to use syllables to create an engaging flow.

With just five tracks, The Prelude EP does not maintain absolute consistency throughout (the transition between “Pretty Bum” and “Road Warrior”) seems a bit off-kilter. Furthermore the production is nice, but with the exception of “Forever Luvlee” none of the tracks really leap out of the speakers. That said, The Prelude EP is an exciting preview of what is to come for a truly legendary emcee.
