And Justin, Hiero being “west-coast alternative” is common knowledge. Hiero, Freestyle Fellowship and the Pharcyde always get juxtaposed with the traditional westcoast sound (all of the above drew heavily from jazz, and not funk).

This was a lot better to me than e.g .the overhyped Brother Ali album. Definitely a nice surprise– who knew Del still had it in him!

Listened to the album, and thought it was a lot better than most of his recent work. I love Del, but some of his latest shit hasn’t been up to par. Parallel Thought had some nice fucking beats, but I thought some of ‘em didn’t match the MC’s flow very well…. but this was my first listen, so ill give it another listen soon. Anyone know when the sequel to Deltron 3030 is comin’ out? Now that I cannot wait for!

JustPlans – Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. And yes, it’s very good to have Del back on track.

Justin – Also, thanks for the comment. This definitely is a very enjoyable listen. As for Hiero, I personally don’t classify them with traditional boom-bap such as Gang Starr, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Group Home, Brand Nubian etc… because I feel that they always brought additional elements to their songs that set them apart. For example the unconventional “7 Sixes” and the ultra-hyper “Halo” (granted both of those are on Full Circle, not 3rd Eye). But I can see what you mean about their sound having some roots in boom-bap and in that sense you are certainly correct.

Total side note, but it’s interesting to me that you’d see Heiro as “west coast alternative” — 3rd Eye Vision always sounded like a boom bap classic to me.

I thought this album was pretty fucking rad, but I’m also a big fan of both of these cats, plus the production team behind it. I agree on Gaining Ground being a curiously weak ending note, but I felt everything else.

Really nice review liked how you compared their backgrounds and glad to hear Del’s back on track. The production is still a bit of a question mark to me but can’t wait to check this out.
