Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Potholes

What’s to say about Breez Evahflowin that hasn’t been said? The mainstay of MTV when Direct Effect was in existence, he has made himself a constant household name with his sharp wit and effervescent rhymes that have had the many heads in awe.  On his fifth album Breez Deez Treez,  Breez is a tad more on the personal and storytelling side, putting aside the battle tested lyrics that emerged for a more mature sound.

The lyrical context has its benefits.  Folks may think its a tad on the bland side, that it doesn’t have the same vibrancy and energy that we’re used to hearing from Breez.  The once energetic tone he used is much more subdued and reflective, starting with the track “Background Music”.  It’s good for Breez to be serious for once, especially on the heartfelt ode “Moms”,  the downtrodden odes of “I Failed” and “When You Fall”, as well as the very detailed stories exuded on “Dot Dot Dot”.  These several songs seem like Breez has undergone a ton of personal reflection and hardship, and for him to be personal like this is a daunting task. But he is able to pull it off due to his blunt way of delivering lyrics.

Not one to leave out who he is as far as being a battle tested rapper and utilizing his skill which originally made us fans in the first place, he provides this in several areas.  “Luck Vs. Skill” re-establishes his nature. And “Let ‘Em Know”, while being reflective, at the same time is very much well punctuated in its lyrics.  The only issue with this is while the lyrical effort is there, it is the fault of the production for not maintaining a similar energy.  The production proves to be bland when Breez just starts to be energetic in delivery, though the beats are well done for the emcee’s more reflective tracks.

Breez Deez Treez is an interesting project at its core.  Its main issue proves to be its consistency on the production side, though it still shows that Breez has the skill and the wit to be a great rapper. Also, his shedding of a lot of his trials and tribulations proves to be very effective.  Maybe we’re seeing the shedding of a different Breez Evahflowin here.
