Bay Area psych-rock boom-bap ambassador Al Lover dropped a mixtape this week via Soundcloud. As the title Reverb Rap might imply, it’s a slight departure from his usual forward-thinking instrumental hip-hop/ garage rock fusion- this time he took a collection of his favorite contemporary rap tunes, mixed them together, and gave the whole thing the real-deal psychedelic treatment, generously applying deep spring reverb, liberal quantities of tape echo and some genuinely trippy effects.
Nobody’s safe from Al Lover’s altered-state alterations, as cuts from the likes of Action Bronson, King Mez, Himanshu, A$AP Rocky, Gangrene, Domo Genesis and others are transformed from boom-bap bangers to kaleidoscopic, acid-drenched epics. He’s leaving his Bay Area nest next week, too, swinging up through the Southeast towards the Mid-Atlantic on a brief tour (dates below), so if you just can’t get enough of Al Lover’s unique psych-hop, here’s your chance to catch the real deal.
