Ahwlee – Chillist [EP]

A new beat tape from Long Beach serial chiller Ahwlee went out via Bandcamp this week, and if it got any more laid-back it’d be fully reclined. Apparently calling your release chillist. is not an empty threat if you’re putting your beats together in sunny Southern California, because these tracks are dusty, mellow and easy-going. Don’t mistake mellow for boring, however, because Ahwlee’s production is nuanced and intricate underneath the minimalist overtones. There’s jazzed-up Rhodes all over the place, and the percussion work masterfully includes a ton of negative space in between perfectly chopped breaks. They’ll get your head nodding for sure, but chillist. is definitely intended to be heard in a hammock, with a frosty adult beverage in one hand and a bare minimum of concerns in the other.
