7even Sun – Another Dimension

7even Sun – Another Dimension
Number 24 Records: 2011

Having never reviewed an album without lyrics before, I sat on this record for longer than I should, a bit puzzled on where to begin. Then, I just decided to hit play and see what happened. Hindsight being 20/20, I soon realized this Another Dimension album by French producer 7even Sun has a lot to say – maybe even more than some artists who have a whole language at their disposal.

Full of funky grooves, faded-in Hip-Hop samples and well-placed, subtle piano or string loops, Dimension could be the soundtrack for a painter’s first exhibit or what you hear at that hip new lounge downtown (“OnDaWay”). It could be the backdrop at an upbeat spa (“Light Blue Lights)” or something you reach for when preparing dinner for your significant other (note: don’t waste this album on a side chick). Overall, this Hip-Hop instrumental’s smooth transitions and surprising yet still mellow mixes fit a multitude of situations. Hell, a lot of it is even danceable – especially tracks like “Zombies Grooves” (get your “Thriller” on to that one), “Back with the Family” and “Yesterday Night”.

With each song built in layers – usually starting with a strong bass or drum line, then adding transitional high-points, some piano or drums intermittently – the album blends together as one cohesive unit. That said, some bland tracks like “Levitation” and “Shamanism”seem to stifle the rhythm of it all just a bit. But upbeat, driving tracks like “Akane Nakaamusi” and “Fighting the Good Fight” more than make up for the low points.

While Another Dimension might not take you to another plane of existence, it’s unique enough to remind you not all good music is filled with words, nor should it be.
