With every new song Thurz releases from his upcoming album LA Riot, I become more convinced that the split of U-N-I was a good thing. Both Yonas and Thurz have held their own as solo artists and the latter’s concept album/tribute to the 1992 riots that rocked Los Angeles is shaping up to be pretty tough. On “Riot” DJ Khalil provides the aggressive backdrop, Black Thought is Black Thought (i.e. aggressive lyricist) and Thurz sounds a little agitated as he talks terrorism and the never-gonna-die rumor of LeBron James’ mother fornicating with Delonte West. We’ll have to wait for the album’s release on Aug. 9 to see if it’s a worthy companion to the masterpiece that is “Man Pushing Shopping Cart In Front Of Flames”.
