Reflection Eternal are back with their latest mixtape mixed by Statik Selektah. The mixtape is nice treat in preparation for their upcoming album Revolutions Per Minute dropping February 2010. The new mixtape features new tracks, Rawkus classics and unreleased material. Props to Showoffhiphop.com and Yearoftheblacksmith.com
Thought I would get one more post up before the festivities commence. This is a joint I got my hands on the other day from Truck North over one of the cuts off The Roots Sandwiches EP. Props to Bear-One on the loop of this track, a perfect break for Truck to go to work over. Give this a spin and enjoy your NYE celebration!
Just when you thought they were done for the year, those Michigan area musicians drop yet another incredible project on us. This time around, singer AB fills a 17 track mixtape with some of the brightest neo-soul and hardest hitting hip-hop of the year. As if that weren’t enough, the features on here add an extra layer of dopeness to this project. Guests include 14KT, Black Milk, Elzhi, T3, Phat Kat, Eric Roberson, and Bishop Lamont. Check it out and leave us your thoughts.
I have yet to read it, but Todd Craig released a novel not too long ago called tor’cha. Based on the lives of three inner-city children, I am hearing this is a story worth checking out. Along with the book, Todd Craig teamed up with DJ Phille Blunt to drop the mixtape that I posted below. And if you head over to the website, you can buy the book that also comes with a CD, which features the track we are leaking today. Give “Dark Forces” a spin and get your read on!
Here is a soothing track from the homie Preach Jacobs, produced by Katrah-Quey called “Go Back”. A real throwback vibe on this one, definitely something worth peeping as we wait for some new Preach. Give it a spin and let us know what you think…
We shed some light on their free album Golden Age the other day, but I felt like this video deserved another post of its own. I always get excited about upcoming talent like this as you can tell, and there are only good things in store for this wonderful duo. The production on here is absurd, and the vocals are straight up infectious. I also included a killer cover of Drake’s “Houstatlantavegas” as a bonus for you all to enjoy. Give it a spin and share some thoughts. Be sure to cop Golden Age if you haven’t already!
London, England based producer Jon Phonics recently released a free 28-track instrumental album showcasing beats he constructed over the last two months called, Jonathan’s Beats & Pieces. The album turned out to be a dope inside look on what this talented beatsmith has to offer, especially considering it takes a year or two for other producers to whip up a beat tape like this.
You can expect spaced out foundations, dirty electronic stabs, trippy samples, blunted bass lines, and yet another solid beat showcase from an overseas up and comer. Don’t sleep.
The Revival gives a candid glimpse into the first meeting of legendary Hip-Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante and veteran Philly emcee Bahamadia, as they trade stories of their struggles and triumphs in the industry over their long careers. It also shows the exchange of lessons between them and up and coming artists DJ Shortee, Eternia, Stacy Epps, and Invincible. This short documentary, a collage of performances and behind the scenes footage, was filmed and directed by Invincible while on the road in Europe as part of We-B Girlz all women in independent Hip-Hop tour. The largest all female Hip-Hop tour of its kind, it spanned over three weeks, six countries, and featured dozens of female artists who performed for tens of thousands of supporters.
As the hip hop community continues to feel the buzz around the previously-leaked “Creation,” a second song has been unearthed from the shelved 1973 debut album by the El MidaZ Affair. “Stereotypical Black Man” finds MidaZ and special guest Vis Major speaking on the challenges Black America faces in our society – a message that rings just as true today as it did when the song was penned over 30 years ago. Flanked by a stuttering drum pattern and starkly bright guitar, this track is amusing and heartbreaking all at once.
Further exploration in the vaults has revealed that the entire El Midaz Affair album is intact, and Potholes in My Blog will be releasing the entire project for free on January 5. Stay tuned…
One of my personal favorite producer-rappers hooks up with DJ Pocket for a fresh, free LP dubbed In The Loop. According to Culture King, Count Bass D and DJ Pocket hit the studio to make a record of them spitting over breaks and loops. Personally, I must say I’m really impressed with how Count’s improved on the mic with every release he’s put out there. And I hope you all got to check out his L7 record, which was flawed but still very solid. Anyway, enjoy this free album and let us know your thoughts.
