18 Carat Affair has released a steady stream of “woozy funk” in 2011 and I’ve enjoyed it all. The newest album is Televised Tragedies, and the title makes me think of Budd Dwyer’s 1987 suicide in front of TV cameras. Fortunately, the music doesn’t bring to mind such morbid visuals.
The description 18 Carat Affair provides for his new project is: “Fragmented transmissions from subculture 2020.” The songs made me picture scenes from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mars vacation, and it turns out that the last track on the album is titled “Total Recall”. Coincidence? Did I happen to see that track title without processing it, which made me believe the music reminded me of the film? These are all deep questions that I’ll have to explore on my own time, but you can simply listen to the music and move on, unburdened by whys and hows that you need answered. How fortunate for you.
