Yesterday I got hit with an email from a cat named blctxt, an emcee from Atlanta. With a name like that and being from a region like that, I made a very quick assumption as to what this submission was going to sound like. But to my surprise, this guy had two really fresh cuts that showcased some exceptional flow and content. I’m not saying he is a premier emcee as of yet, but I definitely see the potential in blctxt and we will be following his development closely. Check it out and let us know what you think about the music…
You already know what it is per this post’s headline: One of Potholes’ favorite production teams – Keelay & Zaire – tackled and remixed Tanya Morgan’s dope “So Damn Down” off Brooklynati, one of 2009’s best records. Gone are the soulful samples and horn stabs of the original. In their place is a beat driven by synthesizers and some nice-as-hell drums you should already know from the homies Kee & Zee. Oh, and did I mention that Tanya Morgan dropped some new verses to make this more than just any ol’ remix. Emcees and producers alike take note: This is how you do it!
Not much needed to be said here, Illmind has beats, dope beats. And with his third installment of the popular series, Blaps, Rhymes & Life, Ill gives us some new originals and remixes to bump this summer. If you are not familiar with Illmind and his music, this should definitely be a good introduction to his diverse selection of production styles at his disposal. One minute you can be hit with a more mainstream beat, then the next you are spinning a straight backpacker joint that gets the neck snapping. Take my word for it and give it a listen and be sure to share your thoughts as well…
It’s July. The year is halfway over, so I figured it’s time to take a look back at the memorable albums that have dropped so far in 2009. Just as a warning, I will be leaving several, if not many, records off this list that you might argue are worth mentioning. Well, if you feel that way, I urge you to leave a comment and try to convince me. There is also the chance that I might forget one or two records that I enjoyed, but simply could not remember as I wrote this.
Keelay sent me over this track yesterday from his new label-mate D.Black, produced and featuring Vitamin D. According to sources, D’s album will be featuring production entirely from Jake One and Vitamin D, which makes it sound like it is going to be a very focused effort. I am also being told that the album is going to really sit well with hardcore hip-hop heads and the more laid back fan alike. With that said, check out the leak and let us know what you think…
The homie Tunji just shot over his video with Inverse for the joint “So Far” off their latest EP. These guys are making absolutely flawless hip-hop, and after checking out the video, it proves that they have all elements covered. Going to let the music and video speak for itself here, so check it out and let us know how you feel about it… Also head over to MTVU and cast your vote for these guys when you are done!
We dropped Daytona’s short, but sweet Daytona 500 EP a few months ago, but today he drops the long-awaited LP, Come Fly With Me. Let me start by saying that The Kid is not only a premier lyricist, but a top-notch all-around emcee. He is definitely giving a lot of older cats a run for their money in today’s rap game. Not only is he doing it big, but he has some huge cosigns, at it shows from the all-star line-up of guest appearances he has on the album like Bun B, Kardinal Offishall, Amanda Diva, Outasight and more. The production is on-point as well, as the homie 6th Sense handles a large amount of the load, while Cook Classics, The Government, Jet Audio, Ill Bomb and more play smaller roles. Give it a spin and share your thoughts…
Emperess just sent over her newest mixtape, Outside the Box, showcasing her distinguished rhyming ability. If you are at all skeptical about this release, whether it’s because it is a female emcee or you have just never heard of her before, take my word for it, this DMV emcee is about to prove you wrong. And to be honest, there are few females that are really impressing me these days outside of people like Tiye Phoenix or Jean Grae. I am not sure she can be added to that esteemed list quite yet, but she is definitely on her way. Check it out and let us know how you feel for yourself…
Here is a fresh cut from MaGestiK LeGenD off the Exchange Bureau Compilation project, Assorted Good vol. 1. The song features a very soft hook from Genevieve and a hypnotizing piano-heavy beat from Snowman Jack. According to MaGestiK, we should be hearing a lot more from him in the near future. This track is definitely a good sign of what’s to come from the Detroit. Peep the track and leave your thoughts…
Here is the first video off the homie Muneshine’s upcoming LP, Status Symbol. A very nice introduction of what you will hear on the album, solid raps over some smooth production. You may actually know Mune from his beats, but he actually decided to rely heavily on outside production on this one to show that he has the capability to rhyme as well. This video in particular is a nice touch to this laidback track, showing Mune’s international influence. Check it out and share your thoughts… I also included the sampler for Muneshine’s LP below for free download!
